Paean Vessel

Paean Vessel, Acrylic and Colored Pencil on Hardboard by Daniel Liam Gill

Acrylic, Oil and Colored Pencil on Hardboard

I started painting again last week, specifically on my abstract series. I haven’t done any work on this series since I left the Rivoli in September of last year. I’ve just rented a new studio in Portland, which is small but suited to painting. I bought a drop cloth, some ground, borrowed my friend Crystal’s gesso and asked Aspen, a wonderful model here in Portland, to be my brush. We created six pieces that afternoon, this is the first of those, entitled “Paean Vessel”. It’s Aspen’s favorite and was a joy to complete. I refrained from using any oil on this, this finish is done in layers of colored pencil. It resembles encaustic in places. It feels like waves crashing.

Dana’s Mandala — Vishnu
Acrylic, Oil and Colored Pencil on Hardboard I remember this from Joseph Campbell, “Brahma sits on a lotus, the symbol of divine energy and divine grace. The lotus grows from the navel of Vishnu, who is the sleeping god, whose dream is the universe.” When I started this with Dana, I had …

Acrylic, Oil and Colored Pencil on Hardboard Created from a session with Adora Belle, the smallest and funniest model I’ve worked with to date, she’s a delight. It’s a mixture of Adora’s flesh and my paint. The most representative work in the series so far it’s inspired me to do more dresses. Click on …

Acrylic, Oil and Colored Pencil on Hardboard My first work with Lluna, my tallest collaborator to date. This is the most unusual oiece in the series so far, there’s so much in it. Sister Thyme No.3
Acrylic, Oil and Colored Pencil on Hardboard The third in the Sister Thyme Series. It has a distinctly vegetable feel to the composition, leaves that could be wings and the ever present fish at the bottom of the painting. Samantha says the background looks like northern lights. This one is her favorite and mine as …

Acrylic, Oil and Colored Pencil on Hardboard The second in the Sister Thyme Series, created with Samantha. I started blocking out shapes on this piece and a wolf’s head emerged. The model mentioned that her middle names was Ylva, meaning she-wolf in Norse. The name stuck and the piece is officially called Ylva.
